Statewide Fire Map December11 2017

Incident Overview

Fierce Santa Ana winds, combined with dry brush and dead trees, fueled the start of multiple fires in Ventura, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara and Riverside counties. The first of the southern California wildfires broke out on the evening of December 4, and fires continue to burn in numerous counties while ongoing dangerous weather conditions continue. Thus far, thousands of acres have burned destroying infrastructure, residences, and prompting mass evacuations. The fires have closed several major highways, cancelled schools, and have threatened historical landmarks. The State Operations Center is activated to coordinate resources supporting communities affected by fire. State, local and federal agencies are working together around the clock to support emergency management efforts and provide all necessary resources. State officials remind the public to monitor local media and be ready to evacuate if needed.

As of December 11, there are almost 9,000 firefighters on the line battling wildfires that have burned nearly 257,000 acres and evacuated thousands. In support of the wildfires, Oregon, Montana, Utah, Idaho, New Mexico, Washington and Nevada have deployed 152 engines coordinated through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) and an interstate compact to assist with state resources. Cal OES has coordinated mutual aid resources of 2,690 firefighters and 634 engines.

Cal OES has coordinated mutual aid resources of 2,500 firefighters, 600 engines and a total of 100 strike teams and task forces (19 Cal OES strike teams/task forces, 81 local government strike teams/task forces).
More than 1,200 soldiers and airmen from the California Army National Guard (CalGuard) are staged in their armories across Southern California to forward deploy if needed in support of the wildfires. Additionally, the CalGuard has deployed two Modular Airborne Firefighting Systems (MAFFS) C-130J models activated to perform aerial firefighting operations in Southern California, four Type I helicopters with water dropping buckets and a remotely piloted aircraft and RC-26 to support infrared imagery and perimeter mapping.
