President Barack Obama signed the Presidential Policy Directive/PPD-8: National Preparedness on March 30, 2011. This directive asks the whole community to work together to develop a national preparedness goal, a national preparedness system description, and a set of supporting frameworks, plans and guidance documents that will help the nation reach the national preparedness goal. The National Preparedness Goal 2nd Edition defines what it means for the whole community to be prepared for all types of disasters and emergencies. The goal emphasizes that national preparedness is the shared responsibility of our whole community. In addition to stating the goal, the National Preparedness Goal describes 32 activities, called core capabilities, that address the greatest risks to the nation.
